Music Monday is celebrating its 15th anniversary. On Monday May 4, thousands of students, musicians, music lovers, parents and community members will be showcasing the importance of music in Canada, as we sing and play together from coast to coast to coast. #TogetherInHarmony
We are thrilled to announce the BC Regional Celebration will take place for the first time ever in Victoria, on the steps of the legislature. This year seven local schools from the Victoria region will be featured. While thousands of Canadians will join their voices in harmony across the country, the regional event is one of six large-scale celebrations highlighting this very special day of music.
This year’s anthem, the iconic Hymn To Freedom, music by Oscar Peterson and lyrics by Harriette Hamilton, exemplifies a deep desire for respect and equality among all people living in Canada, united as a peaceful nation. Our voices will purposefully unite across Canada with this timely message. This year Kelly Peterson, wife of the late Oscar Peterson, will be in attendance. Our MC is Kim Persley, a dynamic leader in the BC music industry, joined by conductor Adam Con, Head of Music Education at UVic and renowned choral conductor.
Launched in 2005 by the Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday celebrates the importance of quality music education for every student across Canada. This event actively engages children and youth in their schools and communities to both celebrate and advocate for accessible music programs where they live. We join together on the first Monday of May each year to sing a Music Monday Anthem and showcase the power of music.
